Printer ink can be very expensive, especially if you buy branded ink from a retail store. The best way to save money on inkjet cartridges and toner is to purchase online. Not only is the branded printer ink (HP, Brother, Canon, and Lexmark) cheaper online but the generic ink is also much cheaper than most retail stores. So how much money can you save on printer ink? Some sites claim as much as 90%, though we see the average more like 60-70%. That's still a tremendous amount of savings on printer ink though!

When you are shopping online, you can search either by the model of printer or by the product number of the printer ccartridge. It's best though to know the product number of the printer cartridge so that you can easily compare prices across several different sites. HP is the easiest to recognize as far as determining the printer cartridge number. Now that we got that out of the way, here are just a few of the tips we've compiled to help you save even more on your next purchase of ink for your printer.

  1. Buy your printer ink in bulk. Several sites like 4inkjets offer additional discounts on bulk purchases. As an example, buy 3 inkjet cartridges and save an additional 5%. The only stipulation is that it must be the same product SKU. That means you have to buy 3 of the same color inkjet cartridges. The same rule applies for toner.
  2. Check the shipping policies. Look for free shipping offers. Just about all of the sites that sell printer ink offer free shipping. The requirements may vary from site to site though. For instance some may require that you make a purchase of $50 or more while another site may require you make a $60 purchase in order to get the free shipping
  3. Stacking your savings. For extra savings check the sale and clearance bin for ink for your printer first. Typically the sale and clearance printer ink is not restricted from further discounting from coupons. That means that you can stack the coupons on top of the existing mark downs for even more savings. Then check to see if there are discounts available for purchasing more than one inkjet cartridge or toner. After that verify that you are getting the free shipping discount. Finally, apply your coupon on top of all the other savings for an even bigger discount. You can end up saving as much as 80% this way.
  4. Get the XL size printer cartridges. These inkjet cartridges give you a lot more prints at a much lower cost per print. It's the equivalent of purchasing a value size or family size package of another product. Then you can stack any available coupons on top of that for even more savings!
  5. Look to see if the site offers remanufactured printer ink. This is printer ink that is made for your model printer, but is actually made by a printer ink manufacturer and not by the maker of your printer. These offer a lot of value because you are not paying for the name brand. It's just like buying the store brand at the grocery store. It can sometimes be hit or miss in quality, but is usually still worth the money.
