Walter G. Kaehler started as a locksmith along the North Shore of Chicago. One common repair call was for the steamer trunks his customers used for transatlantic crossings. In 1920, after fielding many inquiries as to where to replace their worn out trunks, Walter opened the doors of the first Kaehler Lock and Trunk store. After W.W.II Walter retired and his son Wallace took over the business. Wallace expanded the business by adding gifts, handbags, and business accessories; while doubling the size of property and business. "Kaehler Lock and Trunk" became "Kaehler Luggage, Leathergoods, and Gifts", Quickly developing a strong customer service reputation all along the North Shore of Chicago. Wallace W. Kaehler (Buzz) entered the business in 1979 with the intent to expand the great Kaehler name and reputation as a quality retailer. The first of many remote locations was opened in downtown Highland Park in 1979.
