The corner grocery store grew up with the neighborhood. It happens to occupy a busy corner in what has become the most vibrant artists' haven in the world. In these early days, Joel Dean and Giorgio DeLuca traipsed around the world to find artisan-produced, lovingly made foods that pleased their customers. Of course, the store's founders were also pleasing themselves. Since the day they opened, there's been a certain symmetry.

The same generation that restored SoHo, for instance, also changed the way America ate. They wouldn't settle merely for the first sun-dried tomato, extra-virgin olive oil or balsamic vinegar in the country. No, they wanted the best. They didn't want a basic milk-and-egg store, they wanted one that fired their imaginations, challenged their tastes and turned dinner into a creative exercise.

Back then, nobody knew that good taste could soften the brittle edges of modern life or create a community through a shared passion for the better things. We like to think we taught them at least that much.
