Merchant Information

WebClothes wants to make shopping for children's clothes fun and easy. WebClothes strives to be more convenient and less expensive than other shopping venues by using Internet technology to display the WebClothes merchandise. WebClothes offers hand-selected, quality-made, name brand clothing on an easy-to-navigate and informative web site. By providing value and excitement to the WebClothes customers, WebClothes will maintain WebClothes position as the leading internet-only children's clothing retailer. Three years ago, WebClothes was merely an idea. Living in upstate New York with their two children, Jim and Dee Anderson had considered working for themselves, drawing on their collective experience in marketing, software engineering and operations management. Thoughts turned into serious planning when Jim Anderson learned in November 1997 that the company he worked for, NCR, planned to close the Cortland plant where he was a product manager on an Internet banking project. Although accustomed to frequent moves the Andersons met and married while officers in the Army they had finally found home in Freeville, New York and began brainstorming business opportunities so they could stay. Dee Anderson had worked on several freelance Internet projects, and both she and Jim felt the Internet provided an accessible and convenient way to present a childrens retail clothing. Stationed overseas for 4 years while in the Army, the Andersons had experienced first-hand the difficulty of finding a good selection of reasonably priced, quality clothing for children for those living in remote areas. They also understood the frustration of time-crunched families trying to squeeze in clothes shopping trips. The Andersons consulted with former University of Pennsylvania classmates Dave and Sue Catanoso, an information technology specialist and a Wharton management graduate respectively, who became founding partners. Bette Herren brought apparel purchasing and retailing expertise to the table to round out the founding team. In December 1997, WebClothes became the premier childrens online clothing store with a mission to make shopping for childrens clothes fun, easy, less expensive and available to Internet shoppers around the world. On February 22, 1998, the site went live, offering a selection of some 100 clothing items for boys and girls in sizes newborn to 7X. Operations were located in the Andersons basement with Ms. Anderson and Tricia Goodenough, a friend and fellow investor, handling all sales activities. Their very first sale came that day from a woman in Owego, New York, who placed a $14 order. Word of WebClothes quickly spread and sales multiplied. By June 1998, having proven the concept phase of their marketing plan, the Andersons and Catanosos made the decision to commit full time to the development and operation of WebClothes. Within months, the company outgrew the Andersons Freeville home and the warehouse was moved to a nearby three-bedroom apartment. The rapid growth of WebClothes soon sparked interest from investors and manufacturers alike. With inventory supplies growing and staffing needs changing, the business moved in June 1999 into the vacant Smith Corona factory in Cortland, New York. Soon, additional staffing needs were filled largely by moms who were rejoining the workplace after leaving to be home with their young families. These women brought with them a wealth of ideas and ability in all areas from merchandising and customer service to copywriting and photography. They also brought with them a common sense knowledge about childrens clothes, and their great attention to detail checking garments for the occasional missing button, and detecting click slips, such as an order for Christmas wrapping paper on a July birthday present or a questionable choice of a size 2 outfit in a basket full of size 4s. In August of 2002, WebClothes once again outgrew its facilities and relocated operations to the former Cortland Corset factory in downtown Cortland, New York. Shortly thereafter, the WebClothes Outlet was opened to provide a brick shopping venue for the WebClothes local customers. These days, WebClothes has a well-rounded staff that goes well beyond its original staff of moms, but whose commitment to quality and service continues. The founders attribute the success of WebClothes to this constant commitment to customer service and quality. As a result of customer feedback and tremendous growth, WebClothes has expanded to include merchandise from dozens of top manufacturers, sizes through 18, specialty items such as school uniforms, dancewear, Christening ensembles and much more. WebClothes stands behind the WebClothes merchandise and service every day and continue to grow. WebClothes values the WebClothes customers and always encourage them to contact WebClothes with any questions, concerns or suggestions they may have regarding WebClothes. WebClothes provides customers with a wide selection of quality, competitively priced children's clothing and baby gifts.
